Legion's voice would ring through Indigo's mind for the rest of his life.
[glow=red,2,590]Go, Indigo. I will return your life for now. You are released to your home. But mark my words, there you shall never find peace. At the appointed time you shall return to me and know that you are bound to hell forever....[/glow]
Indigo's body disappeared from hell and returned to the mortal plane. He was lying in the middle of a street, nearly dead, with blood still draining from every pore. A car turned a corner and came speeding towards him, only to skid to a stop. Ms. Li opened the car door and came running to his side.
"Indigo! Oh no...." She rolled him onto his side to help drain the blood from his mouth while another nurse jumped out from the car's passenger side. "We need to get him to the hospital NOW."
They threw a teleportation node on his body and he was instantly transported to the palace emergency room. Code Red alarms blared through the halls and doctors came scrambling in from all sides. Only high-level generals and the king himself received this kind of treatment. They quickly went to work with effective discipline and speed typical of the Juin army. Indigo was still clinnging on to consciousness, trying to breathe into the tubes they stuck into his nose while they tried to clear the blood from his throat with a vacuum in his mouth. His left arm suddenly felt numb. The numbness traveled up his shoulder and slowly overwhelmed his body. He felt himself slipping away. The lead surgeon removed the needle from Indigo's arm and the last thing he heard was, "It's going to be alright... just relax."
Indigo passed into the dream world. Once again he was standing on a sea of glass with the universe swirling below him. When he saw a door appear in front of him, he knew who would come out.
"You have failed me, Indigo." General Dieter's words pierced his soul. The general stood towering over him with disappointed eyes.
"I'm sorry, General, I know."
"He got away from you twice. Twice I held my breath and twice Kenu lived to fight another day. A true Juin would have killed him the first time."
"I know. I'm a failure."
Dieter put his hand on Indigo's shoulder, "But... Don't worry about it anymore. It appears that your soul, not mine, is the one in danger. Legion has cursed you."
"How?"
"I don't know how it will come about; I can only tell you
to beware. Avoid evil at all costs. That's the only way to free yourself from his hold."
"Yes, I will."
"Be careful."
Careful.....Careful..... Indigo heard the words' fainting echoes as he slowly awakened. The words were replaced by the gentle beeping of his pulse on the heart monitor, and the darkness of the universe gave way to the light of his hospital room. He stared at the ceiling, just listening to his heart's electronic beat. When he tried to sit up, he was stopped by a sharp pain in his abdomen before he could even lift his head from the pillow.
"Oww.. uhh.. dang."
A groggy woman's voice woke him up, "Indigo? You awake?"
Ms. Li was sleeping with her head down and her arms folded on the table. She finally managed to sneak in five minutes of sleep before Indigo's painful grunting woke her up. Her hair was a mess in its loose ponytail, and there were dark circles under her eyes. She got up from her chair and stepped next to the bed. She smiled at him and stroked his hair, "I'm so glad you're awake. How do you feel?"
"I can't move. It hurts."
"I know. But still...." Her smiled disappeared. Indigo watched her eyes glass over as small tears rained on the sheets, "I'm so glad you're alive. So glad."
Ms. Li stepped back towards the table to wipe her eyes with a tissue. She tried to wipe the wet spot she left on the bed, but it wouldn't go away. Tears kept running down her cheeks. She described his injuries through her choking voice, speaking in third person and re-enacting the lead surgeon's prognosis, "Class III burns on 100% of his body. Mass hemorraging from his carotid artery. Left Femur is broken in four places, shattered metacarpals in the right hand, dislocated left shoulder, Class 3 skull fracture, compression fracture to his number 7 vertabrae, ribs 4,5, and 6 are also broken; left lung is punctured, Class III piercing damage to the kidneys and intestines..."
She couldn't go on anymore. She broke out in tears again. Indigo couldn't even lift a finger to comfort her, so he just let her cry until she could contain herself, "Class III, everything was 'Class III, Class III.' Chance of survival was 1%, but somehow you made it. You died twice and both times you came back. It's like someone was watching over you."
"Li... were you there... with me... during the surgery?"
"No, I was off duty. I could only watch from the observation deck."
"Then... it.. it must have been you. You were the one watching over me," His voice dropped to a whisper,
"Thank you."
She kissed his forehead and stepped back towards the window to blow her nose. "Now that you're awake, I guess I can go. The other nurses will take care of you. I have some business to take care of but I'll be back, ok?"
"Ok.."
She kissed his forehead one last time and walked out of the room, still wiping her eyes.
