The Guardian’s Lookout swarmed with activity as the United Nations of Eden set up for the grand conference. Fountains and terraces became impromptu gathering places as delegates from all the nations of Eden gathered to converse, filling the normally quiet palace into a bustling hub of activity. An open invitation had been extended to Eden, and many had come to this public forum to have a chance to witness, and, perhaps, to have their views heard. The entire island had been filled to capacity with spectators and delegates, with an atmosphere of tension crackling among those gathered. The masses of humanity on Eden were represented here in this small sample. Some came seeking opportunity, intent on capitalizing on the situation to curry favor at home and abroad, others came filled with grief, still others with moderation in mind.
Even within the first few hours, before the day’s negotiations started, it became clear that the issue would be a polarizing factor for the body, and the people of Eden. Groups claimed small terraces as their own, and strung banners advocating positions. The wings of the building were split nearly evenly between the pro and anti registration forces, each further subdivided into its own fractions, with the smaller rooms in the center of the great hall occupied by those who’s opinions were less to the extreme. Security guards wearing the UNE issue red and white moved among the crowds, trying to keep the two opposing forces separated into their chambers, to keep the debate under control. Already two or three fistfights had been broken up, with offenders carefully locked away before they could create further disturbance.
From one room, voices shouted loudly, as the speaker whipped the crowd into a fury, ”We’ve had ENOUGH of living under the boots of these few beings! They would have us treat them gods, unchecked, as they battle across our lands. What have they done to benefit us? Nothing. No jobs, no taxes, just endless conflict with us caught in the middle. It’s time to put a stop to this madness! The victims of this years crime MUST have justice against those who caused it. They will tell you that these people are just like you, and I, but I say that every one of them has blood on their hands!”
From the other side of the building, and with just as much energy a voice shouted loudly into a microphone,”This is nothing more than an encroachment of our freedoms. The government tells you we must register this minority among us, why? Because they are different, because they have abilities others do not? This body is a sham, capitalizing on the tragedy to meet its own ends. We must resist this encroachment of our rights.”
Translators scurried about, taking notes and repeating the speeches in all the dialects of the plant as the delegates mingled about the crowds, attempting to remain incognito and get a feel for how the crowd was blowing.
In a few hours, the great debate would begin, and the issue of Eden’s super powered community would be put to the test for the world to see.
