No sooner than she closed her eyes and reopened them, Ceres was looking face to face with a frumpy old man. She blinked once, raised an eyebrow, then looked over to Zechariah. This wasn't Muffy. Even if muffy could changed form, he could rarely do so without her voice commanding him to. About to open her mouth to speak, she heard a familiar "yip yip!" and was soon pummeled to the ground, her face warm, slobbery, and sticky.
"Muffy!!" She threw her arms around her fluffy dog. "Where have you been? ..Well, obviously here, haha. But that's not the point. I've found you!"
She gave the animal another squeeze then pushed him onto the ground so she could sit up. She wiped the dog's saliva off her face with her buttoned shirt and gave Muffy a good scratch behind the ears.
Muffy looked at her strangely as if to say "Why did you leave me, woman?!"
Still sitting on the ground, Ceres stuck her tongue out at him and commented that it hadn't been her idea and she hadn't left willingly. She elbowed Zechariah's leg.
During all of this, the old man watched complacently. Then, suddenly, he errupted into a swarm of questions and wild comments. He threw a pot from his shopping cart at Ceres. Not expecting it, it hit her in the head.
"What in tarnation do ye be doin' here?? Git outta mah home!!" the crazy old man yelled, motioning to the crumbling shack of an abode in which he dwelled. "And don't ye come takin' mah dog, neither!" He grabbed Muffy by the collar.
"Hey! Now wait just a minute, sir. This is my dog, Muffy. See the identification tag on the collar your choking him with?" Ceres scowled.
The old man looked sheepishly at Muffy as he loosened his grip on the collar. "Sorry pup." Looking back at Ceres he retorted, "Well if he means so much to yas, then why did ye leave 'im, huh?"
"I left him accidentally and meant to come back for him," she focused on Muffy and her tone changed to baby the dog. "Isn't that right, my little Muffy-muffin?" she puckered and reached out her hand to scratch the dog's head.
The old man slapped her hand as she touched Muffy. "Young lady, you will not touch this dog! How dare you and your little man there appear out of nowhere in my house and try and take this dog I've cared for and rescued out of the jaws of death!!"
Ceres glared at the old man. She was taught to respect her elders, but it was becoming very difficult to do so with this particular one.
Muffy squirmed and wriggled free of the old man's grasp and jumped into Ceres' lap again. Ceres gave a satisfied look at the old man.
"Why you pompous little young-un!" his voice wreathed. "Pup! What about all we've been through, my lil dog!? I thought we had bonded! I gave you water!!"
Muffy turned up his nose as if to say "That's all I wanted you for."
"USED!!! I was used by a dog!! You stupid hairy animal! Pompous! Just like your mistress: stupid and pompous!" he threw another pot at Ceres and her dog.
