"So who are you wif, mister?" asked the little girl, smiling up at him.
Yuri smiled, and ruffled the girl's hair with his hand, getting a giggle out of her as he looked around himself at the area around him.
The zoo was crowded that day, moreso because the weather was absolutely perfect than anything else. Not a cloud hung in the sky, the sun finally able to shine brightly, unhindered, on the small zoo for the first time in what seemed like months. A light breeze floated this way and that through the zoo, hugging each person and animal in kind for a few seconds before wandering off again to the next lucky recipient of the refreshing cool air.
Families from all over packed their way into the zoo, each seemingly heading in a different direction as they all tried to push their way through the mass of people. Kids pointed with their small fingers at the various animals they walked by, from the fiercesome lion cage to the cute, undeniably hilarious monkey cages across the pond that centered in the middle of the zoo.
He smiled again at the little girl next to him. He had run into her crying, alone, in the middle of the crowded mass of people, and pulled her aside to ask what was wrong, only to discover that she had been separated from her mother. Moved, he grabbed her too-small hand, led her by his side, and took her on an adventure across the park, showing her the various animals, both scary and adorable, until the tears disappeared out of her eyes and were replaced by beaming grins of happiness.
In the process, he had gained something, as well - company to talk to, and smile with, and a faithful ally in the war against cotton candy.
He ruffled her hair again, chuckling. "I didn't come with anyone, sweetie. I'm here all by myself."
She gasped, her eyes widening. "No! You hafta come wif me! So you can be not lonely or nuffin'!" she argued, climbing up onto his knee.
He laughed, and gave her a hug. "Sure, sweetie. I can do that."
The young girl named Alexis smiled another of her trademark beaming grins and hopped down from his lap, biting down on another mouthful of cotton candy and turning around to look at all the people around them.
While she entertained herself for the time being, he took the time himself to finish off his own cotton candy, swallowing the last few chunks in two large bites, tossing the stick in the garbage can next to the green oak bench he was sitting on.
"Mommy!" he suddenly heard, and looked up to see the girl streaking off into a space in the crowd, where a young woman was frantically looking around, obviously worried about something.
His senses flared off at that moment, but not from the kid or her mother; something was off. Danger was near.
There was no time to react, though, as a devastating explosion ripped through the entire zoo, destroying buildings and cages alike in one fell swoop. Everyone around Yuri dropped down to the ground, covering their heads and kids, smoke sliding across the area like a snake across the grass, covering the entire center of the zoo for a long moment before fading slightly.
Yuri's eyes looked all around to make sure everyone was okay, but immediately stopped in front of him, staring at the only man that was still standing up.
The man dressed for battle. Outfitted with a tight black body suit, crude pieces of armor jutted out around it, attaching themselves in odd ways and designs, as if crudely put together at the last minute by someone not as experienced as others. At the same time, however, the armor glinted with a sort of divine quality, sharp points jutting out from the gold armor in various angles, as if to intimidate his opponents in battle.
His hair was white, spiked upwards slightly, with thick red streaks throughout the top and back, sliding downwards to connect to two dark crimson clumps of hair at the back of his neck. The man's body was nothing short of gigantic, standing at well over six and a half feet tall, and rippled with muscles on his entire body.
The man's eyes were his most intriguing quality; completely black, they seemed so devoid of light that they literally seemed to suck the light out of the area.
Yuri's senses went from completely relaxed to downright enraged in less than a second as he watched the man pick up the little girl's mother, holding her firmly by the throat, her gasps and sputters doing nothing to relieve the pain that was threatening to overwhelm her with each passing moment.
"Mommy!" the little girl shrieked, getting up from the ground to run towards her mother, not caring about the man.
The man turned his head from the mother to look at the child. His free arm raised, pointing itself towards the girl, a silent testament to an upcoming doom. Condensed ki flashed to life in the man's palm, making the young girl pause a mere thirty yards away.
With barely a sound, except for a deafening roar, the man unleashed a high-powered blast directly at the little girl.
The entire area erupted with bright light, dust, and smoke, covering the area around and behind the little girl. Buildings behind them crumbled and fell to pieces, unable to hold themselves up. The ground had caved in from the blast itself, forming a small meteroite-path crater in the ground under and behind where the young girl used to sit.
The vicious man smirked, and turned his gaze to the woman to finish the job he was setting himself out to do, but then the man paused, and turned back. He had seen something, a shadow in the smoke. Could it be?
As the smoke cleared, brilliant white wings of pure light began to glow brighter and brighter, their encompassing shelter surrounding the spot where the young girl had stood.
The smoke faded, and as the man watched with intent focus, the wings began to fold back, dissipating as they moved before disappearing completely.
Yuri floated in the air, the young girl in his arms, his wings fully retracted once more, head bowed down, eyes closed. Slowly, they began to open, his head turning up in the process to look at the man dead in the eyes.
His gaze was nothing short of pure hatred as he stared down the intruding man.
"You killed innocent lives," Yuri stated simply, pointing out the obvious. His arms cradled the still-living girl in his arms, although she was unconscious from the explosions.
The man smirked, wider this time, and shrugged, lowering down into a fighting stance.
Yuri's eyes were now completely focused, devoid of the happy expression present not ten minutes ago. His body collapsed into a defensive fighting position, his gaze intent on his opponent's.
