From above, the bunker entrance was a mere ten-foot by ten-foot mound, camoflauged like the surrounding desert and permanently covered with sand, barely visible from any angle. But below the surface, the bunker revealed its true expanse, a massive underground research facility where scientists were working on the world's newest weapon: the Ultrathermal Ray. Inspired by the mass of energy wielding fighters around the world, including the feared Juin Army (which had staged an obvious build up as of late) countries around the globe engaged in a heated arms race to develop powerful energy weapons. The nation of Mangels got there first.
All around the clock the Mangellan scientists worked in their secret facility, developing Rays of varying sizes that could be deployed anywhere. Rifles sized rays were to be deployed to basic infantry units, larger rays on helicoptors and planes, and massive cannons on tanks. Exceeding expectation, they developed Ultrathermal explosives as well, creating the heat and destruction of atomic weaponry with significantly less radiation. The production phase was finished, and deployment of the weapons began a number of months ago, concealed from the world by the distraction of Toma and Karacoto.
The ruler of Mangels, King Angus II, felt the need to test his new technology, and one night his military forces stealthly crossed the eastern border into Hilde, in a sudden surprise assault. The unprepared and underequipped Hildian military fell within two days, without inflicting a single casualty on their invaders.
News of a powerful new weapon and the first invasion of another country in over seventy years shocked the world, and King Angus waited for the world's physical response. As predicted, the world just sat back and watched as the Tyrant took control of the tiny helpless nation. Knowing he gripped the world in his hands, Angus decided to turn west this time, sacking the defenseless country of Celena in under a week. Once again, the world stayed silent, hoping giving these token countries to the King would appease him. But tyrants can't be appeased. The Mangellan army swept north into Trent, the world's largest supplier of coal and a major supplier of diamonds. This time, the superpowers of the world took notice.
The nations of Generica, Rainland, Alband, Pellonia, and Iysisia rallied to the small country's aid. Sending unprecidented hordes of planes, landing tens of thousands of troops, and charging a massive front of armor. In a series of bloody battles, the Allies pushed back the initial Mangellan front, but was overpowered by Mangellan reinforcements. Ultrathermal weaponry was proving too powerful for their tactics to defeat.
News organizations around the globe kept 24 hour watch over each battle, which was turning out to be a massacre in the Mangellans' favor, and every country stood in fearful awe at their might.
