"As if!"
"No, I'm serious!"
The two girls continued to bicker, even as they neared the spooky looking mansion that resided on the very edge of their town. They were the two "friends" of Lady Ann. I say "friends", because they were really acquaintances if we're being nice, lackies if we're being honest and... well, a naughty word if we're being mean.
"The house is really haunted, I'm telling you! Every night, the Blood Red Sandman crawls out of the well in the back garden, and wanders around the house looking for souls to take back home." Croney 1 whines to Croney 2.
"Oh yeah? Well, I'll believe it when I see it." Croney 2 replies, and so their conversation goes on, and Lady Anne's head swivels from Croney 1 to Croney 2 as if she was watching a tennis match. At last, she can stand it no more, and she storms off in the lead of the other two, who hurriedly follow, asking,
"Where are you going?!" Lady Anne turns to them, and raises her nose in a style which was the most obvious evidence of her regal heritage, before saying,
"Let's see about this ghost."
Lady Anne was really related to the Royal Family by what historians might call "a load of bock and cull story", if they were being as polite as we are. Lady Anne's father might or might not be related to the cousin of a Duke who was the nephew of the chief gardener of the Head Steward who had an affair with the Queen in times long, long ago. The trouble is, this cousin might or might not be Lady Anne's mother. So if she is royalty, the embarassing situation of incest would be at its clearest, and if she isn't, then the embarassing fact that a commoner had been treated as royalty would also be revealed.
So, Lady Anne and her cronies entered the house just as the sun was setting. They wandered around the vast, empty rooms for hours, until the sky was too dark to see anything inside the house, and the moon shone brightly enough for the girls to see the ominous well at the end of the back garden. The stars glittered in the night sky, but the cold light of the moon struck only a chilly fear in the hearts of the girls. Still, Lady Anne was either brave due to her royalty, or famously slow-witted, due to her dubious family background. Either way, she crept slowly towards the well, all her muscles tensed for the slightest indication of danger.
Then, all of a sudden, a red hand lurched out of the well and grabbed the side! The girls all screamed and threw themselves to the floor in tears, but Lady Anne peeked between her fingers to watch as, slowly, a shock of white hair reared above the rim of the well, and the monstrous creature inside crawled out and... stared at them. An awkward amount of time went past while the creature stood, looking at them with wide, purple eyes, before it finally said,
"What am 'oo doing?" The girls all looked at each other in confusion, before Lady Anne instinctively offered a correction,
"What are you doing."
Roos frowned, then said sulkily,
"Roos ask first!"
Somewhere in Croney 1's mind, a switch flicked, and the name Roos rang a bell that sounded across all her senses.
"Roos? As in, King Roos of Roosland?" Roos nodded, by now scratching at his ear and clearing out wax.
"You don't... look much like a King." Croney 2 said, ever the doubting one. However, she had reason. Roos was still covered in mud, and had just been hiding down an old, dusty well. Regal he was not.
"What are you even doing here?!" Lady Anne finally asked.
"Weeeeell..." Roos answered, "Roos are hearin' dat dere's dis fing dat's always at dis 'ouse, and Roos wanting meet wif 'im, 'cos Roos need 'is 'elp." Allowing time for Lady Anne to get over the horrific shock of Roos' mutilation of the language, particularly considering her eloquence lessons has trained her against such talk, she then wondered aloud,
"You mean the Blood Red Sandman? Why would you want his help?"
Before Roos could answer, suddenly, the wind whipped up all around the mansion. The walls shook, plants were torn up, and the well spun round and round on the spot. Roos braced himself on the ground and stood up to the maelstrom, while the girls once again dived to the floor. As the winds whipped round them, Roos growled to himself,
"'Ere 'e comes..."
