A blinding light sprang Tai Lieng from his nightmarish sleep. He thought some rest would do him good after his mad dash from the cave, but the image of corpse kept flashing through his mind. He kept a single orbital floating in the room as a night light and a defense against the monster in the closet, and thought maybe that's where the bright flash had come from (this normally happened when he fell deeply asleep enough to lose concentration). But when he looked up, it was still there. Gradually coming to his senses, he heard running and conversation in the hallway. Something was going on.
Stepping out of his apartment, he noticed that the door of his neighbor across the hall was wide open, and the old man was staring out the window. The incoming light told Li it had to be about 6:00, and he was at least pleased that he managed to sleep somewhat throughout the night.
"What's going on, George?"
"I dunno. Something strange. Everything went black, and it looked like a huge meteor--no, a huge planet--was crashing straight towards us! Then there was this bright light--I thought I was dead! But when I opened my eyes again, everything was normal. Come see the news."
George motioned for Li to come in and look at the TV. The images the reporters managed to capture confirmed George's story. In the wake of the phenomenon, there was no panic in Generica, but a lot of confusion, like the kind that follows a massive earthquake. Li heard his phone going off in the other room. It had to be the Captain. "Gotta go, George. Take care, alright. I'll find out what's going on."
Li ran back into his apartment and reached for his phone. Sure enough, it was the dispatcher on the other end.
"Li?"
"Yes."
"We have an emergency. There's no time for a meeting. Someone summoned the Dragon and made some kind of wish that's screwed up the planet. The orbs, of course, have split again, and the Captain has made it our first priority to retrieve them. You're the rookie, so the Captain is giving you the easy task of taking the orb closest to Generica. I'll send you the data you'll need."
"Alright, sounds good."
"Oh, and it appears that some large force is striking out from Albandia, also after the orbs. They appeared out of nowhere, so we're thinking this is the result of the wish. Be on your guard."
"What!?"
"Good luck."
"Wait!--"
It was too late. The dispatcher was gone. Li's phone lit up once more with the coordinates the dispatcher promised.
"Here goes nothing."
